About Hacienda Monte Verde

Welcome

With a history dating since 1898, when a french immigrant, and later on his descendants, started dealing in local coffee growing and exporting, Hacienda Monte Verde is anchored in the best of traditions.
The farm is located in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, one of two regions (along with Jinotega) recognized for producing the best coffee in the country. The plantation is set at around 900 meters (2925 feet) above sea level, next to Macizo de Peñas Blancas, an officially protected nature reserve.
The farm has more than 600 000 coffee trees, distributed among 38 plots, in 260 acres, leaving an area as protected forest. Yearly temperatures hover between 19 and 23 degrees Celsius (66-73 degrees Fahrenheit). Annually, rainfall averages 80 to 120 inches evenly distributed between mid-May and the end of January.
The farm offers year-round employment to some 50 workers, and up to 400 during the harvest period (usually from October to mid-January).

Hacienda Monte Verde has an ever growing implication in matters that impact its community, striving to positively impact its living environment. Sustainability is at the heart of its efforts, to not only ethically improve its business model but also to ensure benefits are extended to its employees and their families, and the surrounding communities at large.

Socially:

Other than the economic opportunities, Hacienda Monte Verde provides a safe workplace, where all national and international employment laws and human rights are respected. As an equal opportunity employer, policies against all kinds of discrimination are thoroughly enforced, and it keeps a strict and continued child labor monitoring policy. All workers are provided with safe water and food, and the Hacienda has made a point in covering all urgent healthcare needs of all its employees. Hacienda Monte Verde also contributes to the development of local communities, exemplified by its support of local sport teams, contribution to educational facilities and work done improving access roads to indigenous communities.

Environmentally:

The coffee production chain is being affected by changing weather patterns, and Hacienda Monte Verde has implemented mitigation measures to help address these issues. Being a partially shaded coffee plantation, soil management practices are improved via increased utilisation of organic matter, intercropping with food crops and application of organic fertilisers. Deforestation and hunting of wild animals is strictly forbidden. Water sources are protected, and saving measures are always in place. Water run-off from washed coffee is filtered and stored in oxidation ponds, where organic pollutants are biodegraded by microorganisms: the final by-product is then composted and used as an organic source of soil nutrients. All these actions have allowed its certification by Café Practice, AAA Nespresso and Rainforest Alliance.

The coffee you enjoy each day has taken a long journey to arrive in your cup.

A Coffee Bean Is Actually A Seed. When Dried, Roasted And Ground, It’s Used To Brew Coffee. If The Seed Isn’t Processed, It Can Be Planted And Grow Into A Coffee Tree.

Depending On The Variety, It Will Take Approximately 3 To 4 Years For The Newly Planted Coffee Trees To Bear Fruit. The Fruit, Called The Coffee Cherry, Turns A Bright, Deep Red When It Is Ripe And Ready To Be Harvested.
